CONCORD – The pitchers duel between Concord’s Maven Parker and A.L. Brown’s Ryan O’Kelly was clearly the story in their teams’ Friday night high school baseball matchup. But aggressive late-inning base running – which turned out to be good for the winners but bad for the losers – thickened the plot.
The Spiders’ Gavin Starnes raced home on a shallow sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth for the game’s only run, and teammate Johnathon Ackett threw out a potential game-tying run at the plate a half-inning later, as Concord took a 1-0 victory in the South Piedmont 3A regular-season finale for both teams.
The Spiders (6-15 overall) swept the season series from their archrival and placed two games in front of the Wonders (4-18) for fifth place with a 2-8 conference mark. Six of A.L. Brown’s 10 conference losses, against zero wins, were by two runs or fewer.
