The Cox Mill boys basketball team defeated Jacksonville Northside, 65-63, on Saturday night at N.C. State University’s Reynolds Coliseum to win its second consecutive state championship.

Cox Mill ended the Monarchs’ 59-game winning streak and became the first team since Greensboro Dudley (2005 and 2006) to win back-to-back titles at the 3A level.

This also marks the third straight year that a Cabarrus County team has won the crown, as Jay M. Robinson took the title in 2016.

In addition to being the Chargers’ biggest win of the season, it was their most thrilling, as they had to bounce back from a furious fourth-quarter comeback by the Monarchs, who trailed by 10 points after three quarters but tied the game at 63 on a 3-pointer by Gabe Kirkendoll with 10.5 seconds left.
