State Championship Winter Recap 2021-2022

ROBINSON BULLDOGS ARE 2A CHAMPS; CENTRAL CABARRUS A SCORING MACHINE IN 3A

The #6 Jay M. Robinson Men's Basketball Bulldogs upset three-time reigning champion #1 Farmville Central 71-68 to win their second 2A NCHSAA Men's Basketball Championship.  Several Robinson players earned top awards including Daevin Hobbs as the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player, Jermaine Gray as the Most Outstanding Player, and Jak Kilzi as a 2022 2A Men’s Basketball Sportsmanship Award Winner.   Click HERE to read the NCHSAA recap>>

In 3A action, the Central Cabarrus Men's Basketball team outscores opponents in the first four rounds almost two-fold.  The Vikings netted 378 points in 4 rounds to their opponents 192.  In the Regional round, Central Cabarrus lost to eventual 3A State Champion West Charlotte 75-84.

NW CABARRUS GRABS 2 GOLD & 2ND PLACE; CONCORD TAKES 1 GOLD MEDAL IN 3A MEN'S SWIM/DIVE CHAMPIONSHIP

In the 3A Men's Swim/Dive Championship, several Cabarrus County athletes took home individual gold.  

Matt Lucky, who is a 3-time state champion in 100 yd. breaststroke; also won the 200 individual medley this year. Lucky is committed to Northwestern University commit.

NW Cabarrus' Harrison Ranier won individual gold in the 200 Freestyle as well as the Sportsmanship Award.  Ranier is an Auburn University commit.

NW Cabarrus' 400 Freestyle Relay Team also took top honors: Lane Bradshaw, Graham Powers, Justin Gould, Harrison Ranier.

In the team standings, the Northwest Cabarrus Trojans finished second to Carrboro with Lane Bradshaw giving Carrboro's Will Thompson his best competition of the meet in the 100 Free, touching in 47.53 behind Thompson's 46.30 seconds.

HICKORY RIDGE DOMINATES 4A WOMEN'S RELAYS

Four Hickory Ridge speedsters dominated the relays at the NCHSAA 4A Women's Indoor Track Championship.  Aniya Woodruff, Jaila Woodruff, Nina Dominique, Abigail Thomas won the 4 x 200 relay finishing in 1:42.10.  The same dream team flew through the 4 x 440 relay crossing in 3:59.83, more than three seconds ahead of their competition.

MCEACHERN & PICKARD OF MOUNT PLEASANT WIN 2A GOLD; BAGLIO & JACKSON OF CENTRAL CABARRUS TAKE 3A WRESTLING TITLES; NINE CCA ATHLETES PLACE

Mount Pleasant sophomore David McEachern (126 Lb) and senior Kyler Pickard (170 Lb) took home gold in their weight classes at the 2A NCHSAA Wrestling Championship.  Also placing in 2A:
113 Lb. - 3rd Place - Trent Almond, Mount Pleasant
132 Lb. - 2nd Place - Connor Goodman, Jay M. Robinson
220 Lb. - 3rd Place - Chase Crayton, Mount Pleasant

 

Central Cabarrus junior Jackson Baglio and senior Marcus Jackson won 1st place in their respective weight classes at the 3A NCHSAA Wrestling Championship. 

Baglio took the 120 Lb. weight class finishing the year with an undefeated record of 30-0 and amassing a second state title. Baglio recently made a commitment to wrestle at Division 1, NC State University. 

Jackson captured the 132 Lb. weight class and finished with a career record of 161 - 11. He is a 2 time State Champ and 3 time State Finalist.

Also placing in 3A was 138 Lb. - 4th Place - Daniel Tierney, Concord.

In 4A wrestling action, five Cabarrus County athletes from Cox Mill and Hickory Ridge high schools placed including:

113 Lb. - 2nd Place - Cooper Davis, Cox Mill
126 Lb. - 5th Place - Hunter Jones, Hickory Ridge
170 Lb. - 2nd Place - Tomas Brooker, Hickory Ridge
195 Lb. - 2nd Place - Sam Cowher, Cox Mill
220 Lb. - 4th Place - Bryce Gadson , Cox Mill
